Musings & Observations
Amazing how the weather can impact and event with such a swing in temp and humidity. Day 2 just seemed to have gone off so well, the events started on time and the general mood seemed to be very upbeat. Thank you, Mother Nature!
Lots of griping about the bending of the rules pertaining to coaches on the infield so I volunteered to photograph the violators when an infraction occurred. That ended after about a half hour when I ran out of room on my memory card after taking so many images as evidence. That and the fact, I’d rather not loose friends amongst the coaching ranks!
New Section6Runs rule to be imposed next year. If you graduated and you come back to visit as an alum, you cannot age. So many Section VI alum came back this weekend and my god, they grew up to be young men and women and not kids anymore. Stop it, I’m feeling old enough as it is!
Congratulations to Iroquois coach Scott Rollo and Olean coach Paul Ksionzyk on their retirements from teaching and coaching. Your careers in the classroom and in athletics have impacted so many young men and women more than you can possibly imagine. I’m privileged to be able to call both of you two of my close, personal friends.
Did anyone catch the number of media at Day 2? Must have had at least 2-3 photographers and 3-4 journalists. Finally, some recognition for track & field!
I really enjoyed this year's Senior Lap in the amount of joy the seniors exhibited. It really kind of hit me this year as I looked amongst the faces of the seniors and thought, “My god, so and so is graduating?” Many of you I’ve been photographing since you were in 8th grade and it just seems like you will be a senior “next year.” I really got choked up when I realized this.
I don’t know about you but I don’t think Niagara Falls HS security are anyone you’d want to mess with. Friday in the school during the rain delay and in/around the track on Day 2, they kept things in strict order and shut down the steeple pond when things started to get a bit crazy. Great job gentlemen!
The end of outdoor track & field is always bittersweet to me. It’s the end of a long running season from XC to indoor to outdoor. In some ways, I’m glad to get Saturdays back (albeit I did not attend as many meets this year as in the past) but I always miss the interaction with the kids, parents, coaches and officials which is probably why I came back after a one-year hiatus.
My sincere thanks to the coaches and officials who let me back into this craziness and afford me the access to take the photos of as many of the student-athletes as I can muster in one meet. I am privileged to know many of you and to share the experiences on the course/track with you.
Finally, to the student-athletes and parents…my undying gratitude for supporting Section6Runs. One of the reasons I dropped out of the scene in 2016 was I thought the site was no longer relevant. Emails and comments from many of you changed my mind (or should I say, shamed me) to re-boot the site. Best wishes to the graduating seniors in your future endeavors whatever they may be. Keep in touch!!!
